The Esseillon barrier:<\/h3>\n

The entrance of the Haute Maurienne possesses an exceptional vestige of defense lines made by the House of Savoy against a possible French invasion.<\/p>\n

It is classified as an historic monument, forts were built by the sovereigns of Savoy between 1820 and 1850 At the top of a natural barrier, it was an obstacle that forbade the access between the Haute-Maurienne and the Pass Mont-Cenis. Three kilometers long and 250 m in height, this barrier is made up of 5 forts bearing the names of the kingdom's sovereigns: the Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se redoubt, Fort Victor-Emmanuel, Fort Charles-F\u00e9lix, Fort Marie-Christine and the unfinished fort Charles-Albert. After the unification of Savoy to France in 1860, the forts lost their usefulness. Fort Charles-Albert will be completely destroyed and Fort Charles-F\u00e9lix in part.<\/p>\n

The forts join the ranks of the French army. Then, they will be occupied during the Second World War by Moroccan skirmishers as evidenced by the signs of their battalion drawn on the walls.<\/p>\n

There are 3 routes to discover the place freely including a paper chase for all the family.<\/p>\n

The Leaning House<\/h3>\n
\n\t

Located at the exit of Modane on the road to Valfr\u00e9jus, built on a stone powder magazine which was connected to the railway tunnel Mont Cenis, the leaning house was an observation and defense bunker for the new tunnel entrance commissioned in 1881.<\/p>\n

In 1944, the Germans systematically destroyed all the roads. And railways and placed explosives inside the tunnel, near the French entrance.<\/p>\n

The blast force was such that it threw the blockhouse meters away without destroying it, it obstructed the gallery and annihilated the Powder magazine. The blockhouse remained planted in the ground in an inclined position.<\/p>\n

This house,that defies the laws of gravity , is well-known in Europe.<\/p>\n
